July 3rd Independence Day event – a success!

Thanks to everyone who came out last weekend to celebrate Independence Day with the Milwood and Walnut Crossing Neighborhood Associations!  It was another successful parade and picnic topped off with fantastic music by the Austin Civic Wind Ensemble.  We hope everyone enjoyed the food, music, raffle prizes, meeting your neighbors, and learning about Businesses in Your Backyard.

A special thanks goes out to all of our volunteers to helped create another fun event for our neighborhoods.  From loaning supplies, to grilling, setting up and tearing down, passing out fliers, baking cookies…everything! – we truly could not pull this event off without your help and support.

Independence Day Parade and Picnic on Saturday, July 3rd!

Get ready for the Milwood and Walnut Crossing Neighborhood Associations’ most popular event – the annual Independence Day Parade and Picnic at Balcones Park!

This year, the event will be held on Saturday, July 3rd

As usual, the parade will begin at 10:30am at the Milwood Baptist Church parking lot. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate in the parade, whether you want to walk, ride, cycle, or whatever… just as long as you’re in the holiday spirit!

  • The parade will end at the Balcones District Park where volunteers will be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs with all the fixings for everyone to enjoy.
  • During the picnic we will be holding a general raffle for some great prizes donated by several local businesses. Tickets for the general raffle will be sold for 1 dollar each.  Get a FREE ticket by renewing your neighborhood association dues for $15, or joining for the first time.
  • Back by popular demand, the Austin Civic Wind Ensemble will again be joining us to play some holiday tunes.  Bring a buck to throw into a tip jar for them, as they perform for free.  Last year’s consensus was that they made the event “extra special”!
  • We’re still looking for volunteers to help with setup, cooking, cleanup, and a few other odds and ends. If you can spare some time to make this event a success, contact us to volunteer.

Primary Run-Off Election, Tuesday, April 13

Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at Summit Elementary School, Precinct 259 will hold its Primary Run-Off elections for both the Democratic and Republican parties. If you did not vote early during this run-off election, this is your last chance to cast your vote for the Primary election.

Democrats who voted in the Democratic Primary must cast their run-off ballots in the Democratic Primary only.

Republicans who voted in the Republican Primary must cast their run-off ballots in the Republican Primary only.

If you DID NOT vote in the March Primary, you may cast your ballot in either the Democratic or the Republican Primary Run-Off contest.

Winners of the Primary and Primary Run-Off will face off in the November General Election.

Next Neighborhood Watch Meeting – This Wednesday!

Our second meeting with the Austin Police Department regarding the Neighborhood Watch program will be held at 7 pm, Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010 at the Milwood Branch Library. All neighbors are encouraged to attend for more information about recent neighborhood events and the Neighborhood Watch program. This is the 2nd meeting and will get us just that much closer to re-establishing our Communty Watch. We also need YOU to step up as a block captain for your street or sectyour on of street to help us communicate important information to your neighbors about how they can protect their homes more effectively. It is a low-commitment, high-glory job! Thanks in advance for your help with this crucial step in riddling our neighborhood of unwanted crime.

This session’s focus will be on personal safety and is again presented by Officer Dunn, our local APD representative. This is a great time to meet Officer Dunn face to face, and especially, to meet your neighbors. We look forward to seeing you there.

It’s That Time Again… The Annual Milwood and Walnut Crossing 4th of July Parade and Picnic

Calling all volunteers!  You’re help is needed to make this year’s Parade and Picnic the best ever!

This 2009 Picnic is already shaping up to be one of the best as we have just coordinated a special appearance by the Austin Civic Wind Ensemble.  Very exciting stuff!!

As usual we will be holding our neighborhood parade (starting at 10:30am at the Milwood Baptist Church Parking lot) and grilling hot dogs and hamburgers at Balcones District Park where everyone is invited to come out and meet your neighbors and help celebrate the birth of our nation.

In order to ensure a good time for all our friends and neighbors we need your help. The following is what we need to make this a successful event.

  1. Volunteers to help with “Day of” setup, Grilling, Food Line Supervision, Clean Up and Tear Down
  2. Easy to assemble shade covers or canopies.  The more the better
  3. Fold out tables.  Long ones or short ones… we could use both sizes.
  4. Large capacity water jugs.
  5. Ice chests.
  6. 3 barbecue grills. Propane would work best

If you are willing to volunteer for any length of time (if you only have 30mins. to spare we can find something for you to do in that time) or if you are willing to help bring any of the above listed items please use our contact form and select “July 4th Volunteer” and tell us where you can help or call Ed Garaña at 719-4920.

More details to come as we get closer to our celebration.

It’s My Park Day! March 7, 2009

It’s My Park Day is a little earlier this year, so we’ve been busy planning activities to improve our Balcones District Park.  Plans so far include trash pick-up, clearing brush and limbs from the hiking path, better defining the creek bed path in certain places, and careful removal of invasive, non-native plants.

To sign up as a volunteer, click here.  Bring the kids and dogs and join your neighbors in helping to keep our park clean and in great shape!

If you have any questions about the event, or suggestions on improvement ideas, please contact us.
