Let’s Trap and Spay/Neuter Feral Cats!

Did you know the Austin Humane Society will spay and neuter strays & ferals for free?

Are stray cats becoming a nuisance in your yard? Using your flower beds as their personal litter boxes? Hunting the birds? Fighting with your cats?

The best and only humane way to manage the problem is to reduce the feral population through natural attrition.

Come learn how easy it is if we all work together! The first community meeting will be Thurs. July 17 at 7:00. Location in the neighborhood to be determined.

This is the kitten breeding season and the time to act is NOW. Cat overpopulation has reached critical levels and up to 100 kittens every week are being killed at Town Lake.

Please email Brenda Harrison at baharriso1@gmail.com to confirm your attendance so we’ll know how many people to count on. If you are willing to share your living room to hold the meeting, please let her know.

A Fantastic Fourth of July Celebration!

The Milwood Neighborhood Association and Walnut Creek Neighborhood Association hopes everyone had a great time at our annual Fourth of July Parade and Picnic. Judging by the amount of people participating in the parade and the amount of food we served, this has definitely been one of the best attended celebrations in the last few years. the estimate we decided upon was about 400 people participated in the event.

We talked to several people who were joining us for the first time, even though they’ve lived in the neighborhood for a while, and all seemed to have really enjoyed themselves and were impressed by the large turn out. Hopefully everyone was able to at least meet a neighbor they did not know and that everyone feels a little bit closer as a community.

I personally want to thank all the volunteers who helped during the event – from those that arrived early to set-up, the guys manning the grills, the tireless volunteers that helped serve the food, to those that stayed behind to clean-up and pack everything away. Without the efforts from these great volunteers this event wouldn’t be possible.

We also want to recognize the sponsors of this event. Without their contributions this event wouldn’t have been as great a success as it was.

If you have any photos of the event that you wouldn’t mind sharing with us to begin our online neighborhood photo archive please email and we’ll get in touch with you.

July 4th – 5 day away countdown

July 4th approacheth, and again we are asking for your help!

Get the Word Out
In an effort to be maximally frugal, we are asking YOU to help us with the distribution of information about July 4th in the neighborhood. This saves a tremendous amount of postage and gets the word out to your neighbors, and lets us stretch every last dime from your 15 dollar dues. This is new for us, but our friends in Walnut Crossing have done it this way for a long time, so help us on the inaugural effort.

If you can distribute flyers in the next 5 days, come pick up a packet of flyers and sign up for the street that you are committing to do. The flyers and the signup sheet are on the porch at 4103 Dauphine Drive, right now. Come on over.

Passing the Hat
No secret here: the 4th of July event gives us money to operate, through dues payment and raffles. If you appreciate the events we help to make happen in the neighborhood, and the information we try to keep you abreast of, we really ask that you express it right now. You can pay online right here Dues are 15 a year, but any amount more (or less) than that goes straight towards postage, food for events, etc. Your neighborhood association operates completely pro bono, the benefits go back to you.

Pitching In
Able to help with the event? cooking, setup? Have a shade screen you can bring? Dying to make cookies for 300 people? Let us know.

Get Noticed
Do you have a business or a profession that would benefit from exposure to hundreds of people? We are still looking for prizes to be raffled off, and we will recognize your business at the event. We have many repeat sponsors which speaks to the value of the opportunity.

Questions? email us, or call Ryan Lanier at 799-7994

New retail coming to the Domain

A new article is out about the Domain with a lot of information worth reading. Some highlights…

Saks Fifth Avenue will open an 80,000-square-foot store as part of Endeavor’s Domain, completing the lineup of major high-end department stores at a development that will add 8.5 million square feet of shops, residences, hotel rooms and offices to North Austin.

The new Saks store will replace the retailer’s 50,000-square-foot store in the Arboretum area.
Saks plans to open the store by fall 2011. It will join a 144,000-square-foot Nordstrom that will open around the same time.

A new Whole Foods Market is expected to open in the spring of 2011 at the main entrance on the north side.

Simon’s next phase will include a Dillard’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods, along with Austin’s first Westin hotel, which is scheduled to break ground soon.

Help make July 4th a success!

As you are probably aware, the July 4th event has enjoyed great success for Milwood over the last several years. We’d like to continue that success, and we need your help. Since Milwood is a 100% volunteer organization, and your dues are low and voluntary, we really need the community to pitch in as fuel costs force everyone to look at their standard way of doing things.

So what do we need from you?

Number One Need
If you or your organzation have a way to donate food, provide a dish, or give money that would go directly to food, that would defray our number one cost for this event. Food costs for 4th of July can run upwards to 700 dollars, which we have provided for free. We are committed to continuing that tradition, but we need you to help us keep that tradition.

Co Number One Need
people to help walk flyers around the neighborhood informing our 1700 neighbors about the event. It costs us hundreds of dollars to send what is in effect a door to door mailing. If we can establish block captains who can get information out to their neighbors it would save us all tremendous amounts of money, for this event and into the future.

Additional needs:
– volunteers to help with the day of the event
– any sunshades that can be brought the day of the event
– any musicians appropriate for a neighborhood event want to help us kick off a new tradition?

Contact Ryan Lanier at 799-7994 to coordinate if you can help.
