Volunteer opportunity at Summitt

Summitt Elementary has approx. 26 young trees that need some extra TLC. In the spring of 2007, Hammad Rahman, a member of Boy Scout Troop 421, planted 30 trees on the Summitt campus for his Eagle Scout Project. There are five types of trees; all are shade trees that can grow up to 50 feet high! Most are planted along Mosely by the parking lot, and also along the driveway to the front entrance of the school. TreeFolks (a non-profit urban forestry organization) donated all the trees, on the condition that the trees get watered regularly for two years. Thanks to a rainy summer last year, and then watering by Hammad, his mother, and many volunteers, most of the trees have survived. But it’s now drier than it’s ever been and we need some extra help.

The next three watering sessions will be on Saturday, Oct. 4th, Sat. Oct.18, and Sat. Nov. 1st, from 9:00 a.m. to approx. 10:30 a.m. There will be someone there in charge who knows the procedure and has the necessary keys, hoses, etc. If you’re interested in helping one Saturday, please contact Ann Sullivan at 873-7254 or asullivan88@att.net. Please contact Ann first, since is possible to have too many volunteers which leads to people just standing around! Thanks so much for your interest

Yard signs, respect and all that

Folks, on Saturday we got a couple of reports of yard signs getting stripped out of people’s yards in our neighborhood, apparently pretty systematically and on multiple streets, and I was asked to say something about it.

This is a politically active neighborhood, and as a regular election judge, I can tell you it is active across all political persuasions. But we also come together often as a community, which is based on respect, a common base of experience, and a love of our town. As we head into the home stretch on an important election, let’s remember those connections, and respect the free speech of all of our neighbors, and leave their yard signs alone. If you disagree, put up your own. Yay America.

P.S. In case it’s not completely clear, stealing yard signs, is, well, stealing. It is not a prank, it is theft. Look out for your neighbors just like you would any of the rest of their property.

Request for help from the PTA

From Allison Alvarado, Summitt PTA President, (allia@austin.rr.com)

Good afternoon everyone,

We are looking for a few volunteers to help maintain traffic flow for the next two weeks of school. We need at least 2 volunteers in the morning and in the afternoons. We are having issues with people driving thru the park lots in the wrong direction and others parking on or too near the crosswalks. I know that we are planning on making a point at Back To School night to make sure that parents are informed. But until then we need parents to help. This is a huge safety issue and for those parking to close to the cross walks it could be a $250 fine.

If you can help please let me know as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Allison Alvarado
Summitt PTA President
