Thank you Volunteers! It’s My Park Day

Thanks to all the volunteers who gave Balcones Park and the adjacent greenbelt a Spring Cleaning. We had a good turnout, with lots of local volunteers and a large group from a nearby business, Home2Suites-Domain Location, who came out to help.

Construction debris, a shopping cart, mattress, rubber raft, and a bedliner from a pickup truck were some of the more interesting finds.

We were limited on the amount of cleaning we could do along the shared use path past Cedar Bend as City crews were out fixing some drop-offs along the path . The neighborhood association had requested these repairs but was not notified that it had started.  We will try to find out if additional closures are planned.

183 North Mobility Project Open House

The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority and the Texas Department of Transportation launched the 183 North Mobility Project in August 2013 to thoroughly analyze the eight-mile segment of US 183 between SH 45 North and MoPac and determine the best options for managing congestion, providing a reliable transit route and facilitating reliable emergency response. We are hosting an Open House to provide the public with more information about proposed mobility improvements.

183 North Mobility Project Open House
Thursday, March 5, 2015 from 5:00 – 8:00pm
Westwood High School (cafeteria) at 12400 Mellow Meadow Drive, 78750

Open House attendees will be able to review and provide input on the preliminary design of the tolled Express Lanes concept, which will include more than $5 million in enhancements to bicycle and pedestrian accommodations. In addition, the project proposes extending the fourth non-tolled general purpose lane where only three exist now to provide a total of four non-tolled general purpose lanes in each direction continuously between MoPac and SH 45 North.

Project team members will be available at the Open House to answer questions and provide information about the study. The public will also have the opportunity to submit comments. No formal presentations are planned and community members are invited to come and go at their convenience.

For those unable to attend in person, a Virtual Open House will be available on www.183North.com from March 6 – 16, 2015. Visitors will be able to review exhibits, fill out a community survey, and submit comments and questions.

More information about the 183 North Mobility Project can be found online at www.183North.com.

March 7, 2015 – It’s My Park Day – Balcones Park

Balcones Park/Greenbelt Cleanup 9AM-2PM

3 projects planned, we have a good number of folks signed up via the Parks Foundation, but all are welcome to pitch in to give the park and greenbelt some TLC!

1) General Park Cleanup in Balcones Park

2) Greenbelt Cleanup – Cleanup the area along the new shared use trail that will (eventually) connect to Walnut Creek Park.  Please bring a wheelbarrow if you have one.  Long-handles garden rakes or hoes are also good for snagging bags from the creek.

3) Restore Trail connection between new shared use trail and single track trail near Mopac.  This will involve moving branches from the creek and moving rocks to make a ford crossing.

*Graffiti painting was originally planned, but will be done later to not interfere with the other projects.

**time and labor permitting, there is mulch leftover from a recent tree mulching project to be placed around trees in the park

We will meet at the picnic tables by the park entrance, distribute gloves, trash bags and organize groups for the various projects.  If you come later, don’t worry, we will have someone there with maps to get you to a project area.  See you at the park!

No Dumping in Milwood!

IMG_20150111_135530 IMG_20140531_170105Recent efforts by the MNA board to have the City address longstanding issues of dumping along Dorsett Road and the adjacent railroad right of way have resulted in a clean up of several dumps in this area. The area has now been posted with signs notifying would-be dumpers of fines and penalties.

How can you help?

-Please report any dumping activity, downed signs or suspicious activity immediately to 311. Repeated activity will enable the City to take additional action.

-if you hire someone to do a remodel job, landscape, fence replacement, etc that will generate waste materials, ask the contractor where they will take the material. Make sure they take it to a registered landfill or a recycling center. Brush and leaves will be collected by the city if left on the curb in bins or bundled.

Let’s work together to keep our neighborhood looking good!
