Duval Quiet Zone as of Feb 2!

This is news of interest to many… The Duval Rd RR crossing is going to become a train horn quiet zone starting Feb 2. While the train engineers always have the discretion to use the horns if they feel they need to, we should see a substantial dropoff in train horns, and it should only get better over time. This is a major positive.

The note from the city officially said:

“The City of Austin submitted the Notice of Establishment (NOE) to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) for the railroad crossing of the Union Pacific Railroad at Duval Road on January 12, 2011. This Quiet Zone will be officially in effect on February 2, 2011”

This weekend several realtors are coordinating an open house showing on the available properties in the neighborhood. Anywhere from 15-25 houses will be open for potential residents. May be a good thing to let your friends who are interested in the neighborhood to know about!

Staying aware

In the past month, I’ve gotten two emails on automotive type crimes on the neighborhood, and one on mailbox theft. Take logical precautions – lock things that can be locked, light things that can be lighted, participate as a block captain if you can spare a little extra time. Email the board for more info on being a block captain.

MetroRail/Milwood Bus Changes

As of today, January 18th, 2011, Cap Metro has made a significant number of changes to Austin service. Most notably, MetroRail service now runs all day between Lakeline and Downtown Stations 6 am to approx 7:30 pm, Monday through Friday. You can get additional schedules and maps or plan your next trip.

Free parking is now available at the Kramer Station on the street at Brockton Drive, which is the street parallel to the tracks at Kramer Station and just before you reach the station itself. This free parking is available on Brockton from Kramer to the curve of Brockton only and is on a first come, first served basis without time limits.

Now you can feel free to meet friends or family for lunch or coworking around town, take the kids to the Austin Children’s Museum, the lake, or a downtown park without the hassle of MoPac traffic or downtown parking.

The Regional Day Pass, which covers 24 hours from the purchase time of the ticket, includes all the MetroRail and Bus service you need. Other passes are available as well and are listed here.

The previous 240 bus route with two stops on Amherst has been rerouted. Now the more commuter-friendly 142 bus, or Metric Flyer as it is commonly known, serves the Milwood neighborhood.

For additional information not covered here, visit the Cap Metro web site.

Styrofoam Recycling after Christmas!

Summitt is having a Styrofoam Recycling Dive on Dec. 30th from 9 – 11 am, at the school, so we’re hoping you could help spread the word in your neighborhood and school newsletters! The attached document includes a longer and a shorter description of the event – use and adapt however you like. The Summitt Website has all the details, so that’s another easy way to get the word out to people (www.summitteagles.org)

Besides getting a turnout on the 30th, we want to educate folks that 1) Austin’s Recycling program doesn’t recycle Stryofoam, and 2) there’s a company called Cycled Plastics that’s just 3 miles away, and that they gladly accept Styrofoam donations from the public throughout the year (M-F, 7 am – 5 pm). www.cycledplastics.com

If we advertise the event enough, we just might contact the news people and if it’s a slow news day we can tell everyone about reducing, reusing and recycling Styrofoam!
