July 3rd Independence Day event – a success!

Thanks to everyone who came out last weekend to celebrate Independence Day with the Milwood and Walnut Crossing Neighborhood Associations!  It was another successful parade and picnic topped off with fantastic music by the Austin Civic Wind Ensemble.  We hope everyone enjoyed the food, music, raffle prizes, meeting your neighbors, and learning about Businesses in Your Backyard.

A special thanks goes out to all of our volunteers to helped create another fun event for our neighborhoods.  From loaning supplies, to grilling, setting up and tearing down, passing out fliers, baking cookies…everything! – we truly could not pull this event off without your help and support.

Independence Day Parade and Picnic on Saturday, July 3rd!

Get ready for the Milwood and Walnut Crossing Neighborhood Associations’ most popular event – the annual Independence Day Parade and Picnic at Balcones Park!

This year, the event will be held on Saturday, July 3rd

As usual, the parade will begin at 10:30am at the Milwood Baptist Church parking lot. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate in the parade, whether you want to walk, ride, cycle, or whatever… just as long as you’re in the holiday spirit!

  • The parade will end at the Balcones District Park where volunteers will be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs with all the fixings for everyone to enjoy.
  • During the picnic we will be holding a general raffle for some great prizes donated by several local businesses. Tickets for the general raffle will be sold for 1 dollar each.  Get a FREE ticket by renewing your neighborhood association dues for $15, or joining for the first time.
  • Back by popular demand, the Austin Civic Wind Ensemble will again be joining us to play some holiday tunes.  Bring a buck to throw into a tip jar for them, as they perform for free.  Last year’s consensus was that they made the event “extra special”!
  • We’re still looking for volunteers to help with setup, cooking, cleanup, and a few other odds and ends. If you can spare some time to make this event a success, contact us to volunteer.

Help us get out Independence Day flyers on your block!

Hello, all! After a slight delay, the flyers are ready for you to pick up at 4103 Dauphine Dr.

Come on by! Come by tonight! 4103 Dauphine Drive. If one person from every block grabs some to distribute to their neighbors we’ll be done in no time.

If you’re unsure of the process, just roll up the flyer at leave at the front door of the house. If the house look empty/for sale/for rent your can skip it. If you have extras and are willing to bring them back to home base we could pass them out elsewhere.

Please sign the space next to the street you take, and we thank you so much for helping with this process! We couldn’t do it without your help.

Any questions? Please call Ryan at 799.7994.

Hand them out ASAP since the event is fast approaching on SATURDAY the 3rd!

Calling all Donations and Local/Neighborhood Businesses!

Do you want to help us make this event even more fantastic? Let us know if you can donate supplies of food goods towards a successful event. Food donations should either be of a generic variety (hamburger buns, etc) or some sort of baked good for dessert (i.e. cookies).

ALSO, do you have a business that you want to promote July 4th weekend? We have an easy solution for you – donate a gift card towards something of general interest to help us make the raffle a sucess. In the past our prizes have ranged from the massage gift certificates, restaurant gift cards, to hardware store gift cards supplied by realtors, or even sponsoring the water bottles for the parade. If you are willing to help, we usually turn out 350+ people, last year substantially more than that. Your donation ensures that we broadcast your name over the PA system to all the guests NEW THIS YEAR-we will have a table at the picnic designated for flyers and/or business cards to promote “Businesses in Your Backyard” and spread the word about your local business. Let us know if you would like a space on that table for your flyers/cards.

Walk your block with Independence Day flyers starting June 17th

Can you lend a hand getting the word out about the neighborhood parade and picnic?

We always make sure to get info out to every house in the neighborhood before the weekend of the 4th so that new and old residents know they are welcome to share some neighborhood spirit.

If you can walk a street or two, and just drop off the flyers on the stoop, it is super easy: come to 4103 Dauphine Drive, the flyers are on the porch, already broken out by street. Take flyers for a street, sign up on the clipboard, and deliver in the next several days

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!!!

Upcoming Elections Run-Off

There will be Run-Off Elections for a couple of seats in Precinct 259 for the Joint General and Special Election. An ACC and a school board seat are up for grabs.

Early voting will be held starting next week and run June 1-8. Election day is on Saturday, June 12, 2010 at Summit Elementary School.

These local elections often have incredibly low turnout, so your vote will count in a very big way. Please be sure to come out and vote.
