Mobility Corridor Studies Begin

The City of Austin has announced a fall lineup of public input sessions that are being held to discuss improvements to four main travel corridors throughout the city.
The open houses will also be used to introduce mobility corridor studies being held for each corridor. The targeted roadways are:

  • Airport Boulevard from North Lamar Boulevard to US 183
  • North Lamar Boulevard from US 183 to I-35 and Burnet Road from Koenig Lane to MoPac
  • FM 969 (East MLK Jr. Boulevard) from US 183 to the City of Webberville
  • East Riverside Drive from I-35 to Hwy. 71

As part of each mobility study, the City of Austin Transportation Department will examine short-, medium- and long-term roadway improvements that will enhance safety, mobility and quality of life for commuters. It will also take public input into account when devising these improvements, department officials said.

“We’re going to be looking at everything from quick fixes to failing intersections to long-term reconstruction of the roadways,” Transportation Department Director Rob Spillar said. “The solutions for the needs of each corridor will depend both on what’s possible technically and what the community wants and needs. But we think each of these important routes has opportunities for improved mobility and connectivity for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and transit users.”

The city will host the following public forums:

  • Airport Boulevard: Sept. 13, 5–9 p.m., Our Lady’s Maronite Catholic Church, 1320 E. 51st St. and Oct. 3, 5:30–7:30 p.m., Our Lady’s Maronite Catholic Church, 1320 E. 51st St.
  • North Lamar Boulevard: Sept. 20, 6:30–8:30 p.m., St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 601 W. Braker Lane
  • Burnet Road: Sept. 22, 6:30–8:30 p.m., St. John’s United Methodist Church, 2140 Allandale Drive
  • East Riverside Drive: Oct. 27, 5–8 p.m., location to be determined
  • FM 969 (East MLK Jr. Boulevard): date and location this fall to be determined

In addition to the four corridor studies, the Transportation Department is also working on Central Austin I-35 corridor development projects in conjunction with the Texas Department of Transportation. The corridor being reviewed runs from Hwy. 290 to William Cannon Drive. Public meetings will be announced soon.
