Cap Metro Changes Proposed

Following is a list of proposed Cap Metro changes in bus and Metro Rail service. Note several proposed changes that will increase and improve serves to and from our Milwood Neighborhood and surrounding connector areas, including adding weekend service on the Parkfield 240 route. At the bottom, there is a list of meeting dates and places for public input.

January 2011 Proposed Service Changes

Capital Metro is seeking public feedback on several proposed changes to its transit system. These changes are in accordance with Capital Metro’s Service Standards and are based on recommendations from ServicePlan2020, a 10-year plan to improve bus service. The proposed changes will improve route directness and connectivity while increasing efficiency of the system.

We are aware that there is concern about the changes to Routes 984 and 986 and have organized a community conversation about this proposal in Leander for Thursday, August 26, at 6:30 PM in the Leander Public Library at 1011 South Bagdad Road . This will be an opportunity for MetroExpress Riders and CapMetro Planners to discuss the proposal and get their questions answered.

Route Modifications/Improvements
· 1M North Lamar/S Congress (via metric)
Realign route from Rutland to Rundberg to improve route directness and reduce transfers. This change would reduce transfers between Route 325 Ohlen and Routes 1L/1M.
· 142 Metric Flyer
Realign route from Lamplight to Amherst and adjust schedule to reflect ridership patterns.
· 214 Lago Vista Feeder & NW Dial-a-Ride
Consolidate both routes and begin flexible service. Route 214 Lago Vista Flex would improve efficiency and offer new and improved service to Cedar Park and Lago Vista.
· 240 Parkfield
Realign route from Parkfield and Braker to Rutland and Burnet. Improve frequency and add weekend service.

· 243 Wells Branch
Shorten Route 243 at Howard Station and increase frequency to maximize efficiency and ridership potential in high density areas.
· 333 William Cannon
Realign service along Bluff Springs and William Cannon and extend route further east to Thaxton Rd.
· 987 Leander/NW Express
Add three morning trips and three afternoon trips to provide additional commute options for 984 and 986 riders. Schedule would also be adjusted.
· 990 Manor Express
Realign route from I-35 to Lamar and Guadalupe to provide improved access to major employers; and remove service from Harris Branch due to low ridership. Add one morning and afternoon trip and adjust schedule.
· Capital Metro is planning a new Manor Park & Ride to meet demand and offer more capacity. CARTS will continue to operate this route and begin the service in Elgin before connecting to the Manor P&R.
· Capital MetroRail
Schedule adjustments and possible trips added to MetroRail service. Adjustments would also be made on rail connector routes (460-466) to coincide with the new proposed rail schedule.

Route Eliminations
· 174 Burnet Limited
Remove route due to low ridership and service duplication. Alternative service would be provided by Routes 1M, 3, and 240.
· 984 Northwest Direct/ 986 Leander Direct
Eliminate routes due to duplicative service in Northwest US 183 corridor. Alternative service would be provided by Route 987 and MetroRail.

Thefts from Mailboxes

We’ve receive an alert that several mailboxes on the south end of Cabana Lane have had mail tampered with or stolen recently. Please keep an eye out for your neighbors or retrieve your mail as soon as possible after it has been delivered.

Robbery on Yucatan

On the night of July 19th between the hours of midnight and 6 am, some neighbors on Yucatan had their garage broken into. The garage door was left cracked open (so that the cats could get in and out). The robbers lifted it enough for someone to squeeze in, and then they were able to pull the latch and open the garage door manually. They took two motor dirt bikes, one was a 2001 yellow Suzuki dirt motor bike with the number 421 on the side (this bike was not working), 1978 yellow Yamaha dirt motor bike model DT400. They left a 3 wheeler and other things that were valuable. This all took place while the family was at home in bed.

Prior to this, these same neighbors had their house broken into on June 27th, between 9 and 10 pm. They know the time, because the teenager had come home at 9 pm, was home for a few minutes, and then he left. He returned at 10 pm to find that the back window had been broken into. They have two small windows in the back of their living room. The robbers had first tried her bedroom window (evidenced by the screen being torn), and then moved to the living room window. They took only things they could carry. They took: knives, rings, Ps2, xbox, psp handheld game, gameboy sp, multiple games and controllers, a Black and white Fender Squire guitar in it’s case, 2 quarter collections, several uncirculated 1972 Eisenhower Silver dollars, prescription bottles with old pain meds, two backpacks and a large canvas bag with teddy bears on it. The creepy part is that our neighbor has some coin jars on her dresser. One of the jars on her dresser had a dried rose in it. They took the coins and placed the dried rose on her bed. These were kids. They ate strawberries from the fridge, left the milk and chocolate syrup on the counter. Since the hours are so limited, they know that these are happening by someone that knows when they are home, and knows what they have in their house and garage.

Please keep a watch out for anyone trying to sell the above mentioned items. Watch your neighbors yards for any suspicious people or vehicles. If anything looks out of place, call 311 or 911, write down vehicle descriptions and license plates. Be aware of your surroundings.

Independence Day Parade and Picnic on Saturday, July 3rd!

Get ready for the Milwood and Walnut Crossing Neighborhood Associations’ most popular event – the annual Independence Day Parade and Picnic at Balcones Park!

This year, the event will be held on Saturday, July 3rd

As usual, the parade will begin at 10:30am at the Milwood Baptist Church parking lot. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate in the parade, whether you want to walk, ride, cycle, or whatever… just as long as you’re in the holiday spirit!

  • The parade will end at the Balcones District Park where volunteers will be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs with all the fixings for everyone to enjoy.
  • During the picnic we will be holding a general raffle for some great prizes donated by several local businesses. Tickets for the general raffle will be sold for 1 dollar each.  Get a FREE ticket by renewing your neighborhood association dues for $15, or joining for the first time.
  • Back by popular demand, the Austin Civic Wind Ensemble will again be joining us to play some holiday tunes.  Bring a buck to throw into a tip jar for them, as they perform for free.  Last year’s consensus was that they made the event “extra special”!
  • We’re still looking for volunteers to help with setup, cooking, cleanup, and a few other odds and ends. If you can spare some time to make this event a success, contact us to volunteer.

Help us get out Independence Day flyers on your block!

Hello, all! After a slight delay, the flyers are ready for you to pick up at 4103 Dauphine Dr.

Come on by! Come by tonight! 4103 Dauphine Drive. If one person from every block grabs some to distribute to their neighbors we’ll be done in no time.

If you’re unsure of the process, just roll up the flyer at leave at the front door of the house. If the house look empty/for sale/for rent your can skip it. If you have extras and are willing to bring them back to home base we could pass them out elsewhere.

Please sign the space next to the street you take, and we thank you so much for helping with this process! We couldn’t do it without your help.

Any questions? Please call Ryan at 799.7994.

Hand them out ASAP since the event is fast approaching on SATURDAY the 3rd!
